The Jim Henson Exhibition: Imagination Unlimited

Jim Henson’s Ernie & Bert at the Skirball Cultural Center.

by Valerie Summers

Now, more than ever, this beautifully organized exhibition tells the story of one of the most creative artists of our time…the unique Jim Henson.  He took puppetry to a whole new level with his creations which not only made us laugh but sent a strong message about differences and getting along…most appropriate  more than 50 years later.

Sesame Street offered a new learning tool via television for children with an imaginative cast of characters which featured Kermit the Frog, Ernie and Bert,  and Miss Piggy and scores of others. Henson’s creations brought joy to thousands of people through his vast repertoire of productions including The Muppets, Sesame Street, Fraggle Rock, The Dark Crystal, Labyrinth and more. The results of his boundless imagination are beautifully displayed at the Skirball exhibit where visitors also have the opportunity to design their own puppets and try their hands at puppeteering in this highly interactive exhibition for all ages.

The exhibition features more than 20 puppets, character sketches, storyboards, scripts, photographs, film and television clips, behind the scenes footage, costumes and interactive experiences. It offers an intimate look at the genius behind these extraordinary creations.  On view June 1 – September 2.

As a bonus, outdoor movies at the Skirball presents The Muppet Movie, June 29th and Labyrinth, July 13th at 8:30 p.m.
