At the newly opened Steven Matthew Tappan Memorial Pool, Devi, Sumithi and Tembo, three female Asian elephants took part in the San Diego Zoo’s first ever Elephant Pool Party. Elephants doused themselves under the waterfall, grabbed up apples and played with brightly colored beach balls while visitors looked on. The pool parties will continue on Saturdays through September 4. At the Elephant Odyssey exhibit, visitors may also watch the well cared for elephants receive their daily pedicures. Adjacent to Elephant Odyssey, onlookers view the sleek jaguar cavorting in his own private stream while fishing for a meal.
Visitors to the zoo spend hours visiting the various animal zones which include the spectacular new Polar Rim where polar bears may be viewed in seemingly their own natural habitat. Panda Canyon, Asian Passage, and Africa Rocks are some of the other zoo areas. The lush, beautifully landscaped 100-acre San Diego Zoo provides the best possible environment for its animals and is dedicated to the conservation of endangered species and their habitats.
