A Wild Take on A Classic at The Getty Villa

by Valerie Summers

The audience, comfortably seated at the Getty Villa’s amphitheater  was in for a big surprise as they viewed a very modernized version of the classic Lysistrata presented by the Troubadour Theater Company.

Lizastrata, the hilarious musical retelling of one of history’s greatest theatrical offerings, tells the story of the women who go on strike sexually to convince their husbands to end the war.  This bawdy rendition, however, is based in Southern California rather than Athens and Sparta.  The women want the ongoing war which their husbands are fighting to stop and until it does…no sex.  In the elegant setting of the Getty Villa, the talented Troubies perform naughty song and dance routines featuring a mash up of Liza Minnelli’s  greatest hits.

To be a part of the audience filled with laughter in a beautiful setting was  a welcome change. Before the show dining is available on the terrace.

Lizastrata will be performed Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, Sept. 9-Oct. 2 at 8:00 p.m.
